Erfurt Protestant Augustinian Monastery
The Protestant Augustinian monastery in Erfurt is a remarkable example of medieval religious architecture and also one of the most important Lutheran site. Martin Luther was a monk here from 17 July 1505 until the autumn of 1511. The permanent exhibition entitles "Bible-Monastery-Luther" includes information about the life of an Augustinian monk at the Erfurt monastery and is well worth a visit.
The historical library of the municipal Protestant association was founded in 1646. In 2004, the Augustinian monastery was designated a cultural monument of national importance, and in 2008 it became Thuringia`s first "Cross of Nails" centre, part of the international Community of the Cross of Nails.
Today, these historical walls house a conference and meeting centre of international renown. The eight meeting rooms of various sizes, as well as 51 single and double bedrooms (all en suite with shower) ensure a pleasant stay. The Waidhaus retreat situated within he grounds of the monastery is an ideal place for contemplation and reflection, offering 17 rooms and a prayer room that is always open.
