Thomas Church Erfurt

The old St. Thomas Church was first mentioned in writing in a document in 1282 and was probably rebuilt in the Gothic style in the first half of the 14th century. It is located in a park on Schillerstraße. In 1689 Johann Christoph Bach, Johann Sebastian's eldest brother, and between 1702 and 1707 Johann Gottfried Walther, a cousin of Johann Sebastian Bach, played as organists in the old St. Thomas Church for a short time.

On Holy Saturday, 31 March 1945, this church was destroyed by bombs except for the outer walls and the tower. Immediately after the end of the war, the congregation began to rebuild. Thus, in 1950, the restored St. Thomas Church could be solemnly consecrated. It is Erfurt's only neo-Gothic city church. Due to the winged altar from the 15th century as the most precious piece of equipment and the excellent acoustics, it is one of the most culturally and historically interesting monuments of the city.
