St. Boniface Cuts Down the Oak - Painting in the Ceremonial Hall of Erfurt's Town Hall
Erfurt - "Erphesfurt" - was first mentioned in 742 in a letter from St. Boniface to Pope Zacharias asking him to ratify the bishopric of Erfurt.
The portico, the grand staircase and the hallways of the present town hall reflect Erfurt's commercial and industrial prosperity around the turn of the century.
The late Gothic cathedral with its high-Gothic choir and Romanesque tower replaced the church built on this site for Bishop Boniface in 742.
The neo-Gothic town hall on Fischmarkt was built between 1870 and 1874. Inside is a series of murals depicting legends and images from Erfurts history.
