From Boniface to Napoleon
The present town hall on Fischmarkt square was built between 1870 and 1875. The monumental portico and the grand staircase and hallways, which are neo-Gothic in style, reflect Erfurt’s commercial and industrial prosperity around the turn of the century.
A series of murals illustrates the Thuringian legends of Tannhäuser, Faust and the Count von Gleichen, as well as scenes from Martin Luther’s life. The magnificent banqueting hall has murals depicting the history of the city.
