Memorial and Educational Site Andreasstraße
The Andreasstraße Memorial and Educational Site commemorates repression and resistance during the SED dictatorship in Thuringia 1949-1989. The GDR's Ministry of State Security operated a remand prison in the building that is now the memorial site. More than 5000 people were imprisoned here for resisting the communist regime. But on December 4, 1989, freedom triumphed: courageous people occupied the Erfurt district administration of the State Security in Andreasstraße - it was the first occupation of a bastion of the feared "Stasi" during the Peaceful Revolution.
The permanent exhibition, which opened in December 2013, illustrates the themes of imprisonment, dictatorship and revolution on three floors. The stories of contemporary witnesses are the focus of the multimedia tour. With the help of emotionally moving video clips and interactive comics, their stories come to life. Particularly impressive are the carefully restored cell wing in the historic prison building and the modern cube facade with scenes of the Peaceful Revolution in the style of a graphic novel.
