The Augustinian Church in Erfurt

The parish church of St Philippi and St Jacobi already stood on the site now occupied by the Augustinian Church as early as 1131. As it was in a poor state of repair, the Augustinian hermits began rebuilding the Augustinian Church and the cloister in 1276. Over the following 80 years, most of the other monastery buildings were then constructed. Compared with other churches of mendicant orders in Erfurt, the Augustinian Church is the oldest and the earliest to have been completed.  As a historic architectural complex, it is characterised by its remarkable stylistic coherence.
