Former Governors Residence

The building that housed the Governor’s Office of the Electorate of Mainz was constructed between 1711 and 1720 as a Baroque palace according to plans by architect Maximilian von Welsch. For a long time, decisions regarding the fate of the city and the state have been made in this building. In October 1808, for example, Goethe met with Napoleon here. Since 1995, the building has housed the Thuringian State Chancellery, which serves as the seat of the Thuringian Minister-President.

This imposing building is located on the edge of the city center, right next to the Hirschgarten.
