Small Synagogue
On the trail of jewish history
During the Middle Ages, Jewish merchants played a significant role in Erfurt’s commercial life, but were expelled from the 14th century onwards. During the 19th century under Prussian rule, however, Jewish citizens regained their influence on the economic and cultural life of the city. The tour includes a visit to one of the oldest synagogues in Europe and to the Small Synagogue, now a modern multicultural meeting place where visitors can find out about the life and suffering of Erfurt’s Jewish population.
