Small Synagogue Meeting Place
In 1840, the Jewish community inaugurated the Small Synagogue. However, it was only used as a place of worship for 44 years, until 1884, as the community grew rapidly in the 19th century. It built the Great Synagogue on what is now Yuri Gagarin Ring and sold the Small Synagogue to a merchant. He used the building as a warehouse and production facility. In 1918, the city converted it into apartments. In the 1980s, interest in Jewish heritage grew, prompting the city to research the synagogue's architectural history and renovate the building. Building researchers found the mikvah, the Torah shrine, and the women's gallery. As a result, the prayer hall is now in almost its original condition. Today, the Small Synagogue serves as a multicultural meeting place that is particularly committed to German-Jewish understanding. It also houses an exhibition that provides information about Jewish life in Erfurt in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Guide dogs and service dogs are permitted in the building.
Please note: The Small Synagogue will be completely closed from February 3 to February 25, 2026.
