The Chapter House

The chapter house in the east wing of the cloister, built in the first half of the 14th century, is one of the most aesthetically striking rooms in the monastery. It adjoins St Catherine’s Chapel to the south, which also dates from the early 14th century, and is accessed from the cloister.

Its name derives from the custom of reading a chapter from the Bible or the Order’s Rule at the start of every meeting. In addition, solemn ceremonies were held in the chapter house. It was here that Martin Luther was received into the Order as a novice of the Order of Augustinian Hermits, and the ceremony marking his final admission to the Order also began in the chapter house.
