Former monastery church of St. Peter and Paul

Despite significant alterations to the structure of the former St. Peter and Paul monastery church in the 19th century, it remains one of Thuringia’s most significant Romanesque church buildings. As the spiritual center of St. Peter’s Monastery, it shaped the skyline of the city of Erfurt for centuries before its destruction. Partially renovated for the BUGA 2021, it is once again the focal point of the Petersberg and captivates visitors with the exhibition “Paradise Gardens – Garden Paradises.” The special exhibition traces the development of courtly garden art in Thuringia and, using the gardens of the now-vanished St. Peter’s Monastery as a prime example, sheds light on medieval garden culture as well as its history and architecture.
