Combined guided tour of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites Old Synagogue and Mikveh as well as the Small Synagogue
The tour first takes you through the Old Synagogue and to the medieval mikveh in Erfurt. You will then visit the Small Synagogue with its prayer room, mikveh and permanent exhibition. The Old Synagogue in Waagegasse is one of the very few surviving medieval synagogues and is the oldest synagogue in Europe that has been preserved up to the roof. It is a testimony to one of the most important Jewish communities of the Middle Ages. The oldest documented section of the building dates back to around 1100. Evidence of Erfurt's medieval Jewish culture is presented in the Old Synagogue Erfurt. The medieval mikveh, a ritual immersion bath, is part of the Old Synagogue. It was discovered during excavation work in 2007. The immersion pool of the medieval mikveh can be viewed at any time through a window in the ceiling of the shelter. The Jewish community consecrated the small synagogue on 10 July 1840. However, it was only used as a place of worship for 44 years, until 1884, as the community grew considerably in the 19th century. They built the Great Synagogue on today's Juri-Gagarin-Ring and sold the Small Synagogue to a merchant.
