The synagogue of the second Jewish community
Station 19
In 1357, the town council commissioned the construction of a second synagogue for the Jewish community, in addition to the terraced houses, as the former (Old) Synagogue had been converted into a private warehouse by a Christian. Based on surviving drawings, a two-aisled, vaulted building measuring approximately 12 by 17 metres can be reconstructed. There is also evidence for a women’s synagogue.
This synagogue was used until the forced expulsion in the mid-15th century and was subsequently converted into an armoury by the town council. The building was destroyed in a town fire in 1736. However, its location can be precisely reconstructed and large sections of the foundation walls remain. During investigations in 2011, a keystone from the synagogue’s vault was discovered, on which the bases of the vault ribs are still visible.
