Inter Judeos: The medieval Jewish quarter in Erfurt

Station 1

In the heart of Erfurt’s historic city centre, the Jewish quarter was situated during the Middle Ages. Jews had lived here alongside Christians as neighbours since at least the 12th century. After the first community was completely wiped out in a pogrom in 1349, Jewish families began returning to Erfurt from 1354 onwards and settled in the same neighbourhood.

Based on archaeological finds, architectural evidence and written sources, the Jewish quarter can be reconstructed. These paint a vivid picture of Jewish life in the Middle Ages and form the basis for the exhibition, which is displayed directly within the Jewish residential quarter and links it to the World Heritage components: the Old Synagogue, the Mikveh and the Stone House.

Discover the home of Isaac the Butcher, a former bakery, and the site of the second medieval synagogue!

Further information and the exhibition leaflet are available at the Old Synagogue Museum, the Small Synagogue and the Tourist Information Centre.
