Jewish Crafts in Erfurt
Station 5
On this site, archaeological excavations in 1993 uncovered crucibles containing metal residues, various types of slag and pieces of charcoal, which suggest the presence of a metalworking workshop. Until the early 13th century, the site was owned by Jews, and even later, Jews and Christians lived and worked side by side in close proximity. From the first half of the 14th century onwards, the goldsmiths’ quarter can also be traced in the commercial centre around what is now known as the Benediktsplatz.
